Meet Your Guide

My name is Daichi Terui, and I work as a mountain guide and ski guide in Japan.
I grew up outdoors, playing in the mountains and rivers near my home. I have never lost the feeling of those days: the excitement of being out there, and the pleasure of learning something I did not know before.
Wanting to share that feeling with the people I guide is probably what drives me most in this work.
Each qualification awarded by the Japan Mountain Guides Association (JMGA) defines the terrain and conditions a guide is certified to work in.
I am continuing to build experience and training toward the next qualification in that system.
Guiding, to me, means sharing an experience in the mountains and walking through it together. It is work I am proud of, and I want to keep meeting both the mountains and the people I guide with the seriousness they deserve.
How I Became a Guide
I decided to become a mountain guide while I was still at university, and trained under IFMGA Mountain Guide Hirofumi Ishizaka. I qualified as a JMGA-certified guide on graduating, and have been guiding ever since.
From my early twenties I trained as a heli-ski guide in Scandinavia, and climbed and ski-toured in the European Alps.

I am based in Sapporo, Hokkaido and in Azumino, Nagano, and I guide small groups across all of Hokkaido, the Tohoku region, the Northern and Southern Japan Alps, and the Yatsugatake range.
